Description
List of authors for the reissue in May 1966 of Anthologie de l'humour noir published by Jean-Jacques Pauvert hand written by André Breton.
Jean-Jacques Pauvert re-issued the Anthologie de l'Humour noir in 1966. This list presented includes the main authors. Breton, either because he was tired or as a matter of principle, refused to add any recently discovered writers (like Ionesco), and justifies this in a preface whose rough draft also appears in the dossier: the poet reminds us that an anthology is not a directory, and that not everyone cannot be included... [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]
Hand written and signed manuscript and hand written documents, Paris, 16 May 1966.
- 1 page in 4° manuscript dated and monogramed in ink by Breton, with deletions and corrections of the text relating to the final edition of the Anthology of Black Humour.
‘The current revised edition makes some minor corrections to the previous one. It has purposely not been enlarged... the author is well aware of new figures appearing offering the same sort of illumination. He especially had to resist the temptation to add Oscar Panizza, Georges Darien, G. I. Gurdjieff, Eugène Ionesco and Joyce Mansour, but he abandoned doing so for obvious reasons.’
- Hand written list made by Breton of authors, poets, painters and philosophers to be included in the anthology’s list of contents, a list entitled ‘H. N.’.
- Hand-written list in ink by Breton, entitled ‘For 10th November’ comprising the names of Panizza, Darien, Gurdjieff, Ionesco, Joyce M(ansour) and Duprey under the heading ‘Notice and Choice’. [Auction Catalogue, 2003]
