Description

Autograph manuscript with photograph, signed and dated 19 September 1965. The photograph shows the pewter plate engraved by Alfred Jarry and Paul Verlaine.

Handwritten note by André Breton, to be published in La Brèche No. 8 in November 1965.

Intended for La Brèche, for its eighth and final issue (November 1965). This short note accompanied by a photograph confirms Breton's lifelong interest in the literary and artistic movement of the late nineteenth century, particularly in everything related to Symbolism. As well as Verlaine and Rachilde, another enduring reference, Sade, reappears here. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]

Signed autograph manuscript and photograph, 19 September 1965.

- 1 page in-4° on letterhead of the journal La Brèche, handwritten, first draft, dated and monogrammed in ink by Breton, with a few erasures and corrections, of this text about a plate engraved by Verlaine and Jarry.

"The beautiful pewter of this plate brings together two illustrious signatures, bridging the gap between them. It can be assumed that Alfred Vallette, having dedicated it to his young wife – who had, under the name of Rachilde, published Monsieur Vénus in 1884 and was also planning to publish La Marquise de Sade, which appeared in 1887 – was keen that Verlaine should enhance it with two stanzas of his poem ‘Green’ from Romances sans paroles (1874), engraved in his own hand. The great interest of the document lies in the fact that Jarry intervenes to crown these verses with a new stanza to Rachilde which, because of the extemporaneous portrait flanking them, can be dated around the time of the premiere of Ubu, ten years later.

- 1 photograph (14.5 x 14 cm) depicting the pewter plate described is glued onto the lower part of the manuscript. [Sale Catalogue, 2003]
