Description
Manuscripts of an interview with André Breton for the journal Indice in May 1935, and included in Position politique du surréalisme.
Prepared for a short-lived Canary Islands left-wing journal, this interview, entitled Interview with Indice was included in Position politique du surréalisme. Continuing the reflections carried out in Prague, Breton affirms the existence of a revolutionary (or at least dissident) art that doesn’t allow itself to be reduced to lessons of political discourse, and in the same way assimilates the ‘social element’, but doesn’t constitute its trace. For the poet it should be a way of reaffirming the revolutionary vocation of the art, and of the surrealism in particular, and the impossibility of leaving it in prey to the orders of a party or a cause. To the end of his life, Breton will uphold this position, which had been definitively formulated in 1932 at the time of the polemic with Aragon. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]
Handwritten manuscripts, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, May 1935.
- Santa Cruz de Tenerife, May 1935. Manuscript in red and blue ink of four folio pages on white paper, with erasures and corrections, titled and dated by Breton, constituting the complete text of the six questions (in blue ink) and the six answers (in red ink) of the interview conducted for the magazine Indice, a socialist cultural journal in Tenerife. The journal was apparently unable to publish the interview as it ceased publication in April 1935.
Attached is the handwritten manuscript of the first draft of most of the interview for Indice, four pages in green ink and black pencil in Breton's hand, with numerous erasures and corrections. [sale catalogue, 2003]

Cordialement. Jean-Pierre Plisson

Description
Manuscript of a talk given by André Breton in May 1935 in Tenerife
In this text in Breton’s handwriting, comprised of notes and references to quotes and clearly intended to be read, Breton appears in the third person. It is possible to suppose that this was a draft of the speech given in his place at the Circulo de amistad XIV de abril by Agustin Espinosa. The idea of the development of a collective myth, central in Breton’s thoughts at this date, appears as one of the necessary connections between surrealism and revolutionary action; a connection which of course constitutes an alternative to the intolerable submission of the artist to politics. [Atelier André Breton Website, 2005]
Handwritten manuscript, 1935.
- An 11-pages manuscript in-12 format, the first 9 foliated on headed paper from different establishments in Tenerife.
This working manuscript takes stock of Breton’s surrealist campaign in the Canaries:
“At this poetic point of Spain-Tenerife we have come to fix our position for future action, with its concrete conclusions: this position is a function of the general tone of intellectual values. Madrid, on a literary and artistic level, has done nothing other than spray its confusion, disorientation, madness and Salon illiteracy onto the intellectual pettiness of the provinces. All the old junk peddlers have arranged to meet in the capital of Spain.” (Some missing paper). [Auction catalogue, 2003]

Description
Manuscript titled "Preface for the Copenhagen and Tenerife Surrealist Exhibitions" excerpt from the Prague conference, The Political Position of Surrealism.
This "Preface for the Copenhagen and Tenerife Surrealist Exhibitions" is in reality a reworked excerpt from the speech given in Prague in the spring of 1935. The original text appeared in The Political Position of Surrealism, Pléiade II, p. 488 in a more developped version including numerous citations. Leaning on the authority of Hegel, Breton attempted to properly legitimise the revolutionary value of a surrealist art that had been unjustly qualified as bourgeois by the Communists.
Handwritten, signed manuscript, undated [1935]
- 3 pages in-4° foliated on blue and pink paper, titled and signed by Breton. Published in issue 5-6 of the revue Cahiers d'Art under the same title.
"We also know what determining role, in the creation of this completely new artistic perspective, that Max Ernst's "collages" and "frottages" played, as well as the appearance of "Objects with symbolic functioning" (of automatic or dreamlike origin) promoted to real life following an initial request from Alberto Giacometti."
(La Pléiade, Volume II, The Political Position of Surrealism, Appendix, pages 488 à 491, 492, 495 and 496).

Description
This address, which André Breton included in La Clé des champs, completes a previous conference, itself similar to the introduction he gave at the Copenhagen and Tenerife exhibitions. In “Limits not frontiers of surrealism”, he insists on the English gothic novel and its occultation of reason. The poet thus takes stock of a well identified but little explored legacy (Radcliffe, Walpole, Lewis); the conference then refers to Freud and William James, thus resuming the uninterrupted course of a reflection on knowledge.
Address probably given at the inauguration of the London surrealist exhibition
