Description

Manuscript by André Breton of an article dated 1950 about a text by Gilbert Lely concerning Sade’s letters.

Sade was one of surrealism’s precursors from as early as the 1924 Manifesto, but Breton wrote little about him; this small text on Sade, published belatedly in the Inédits II of the third volume of the Œuvres complètes, celebrates Gilbert Lely's discoveries and the upcoming publication of still unknown texts, of which L'Aigle, mademoiselle was the first to appear. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]

Handwritten manuscript, 1950.
- 1/2 page in-4° handwritten in black ink by Breton and dated, relating to Sade:
‘As if it were mysteriously to compensate for the incredible severity of the fate he experienced during his lifetime, Sade’s posthumous good fortune is not only distantly to attract interpreters who are most worthy of him, but also to do so on this supremely thunderstruck ground that is his work…’ Erasures and corrections. [sale catalogue, 2003].
