Manuscript by André Breton dated 12 May 1936 for the preface to the catalogue of the exhibition of surrealist objects he organised at the Charles Ratton gallery.
From 22 to 29 May 1936, a 'Surrealist exhibition of objects' was held at Charles Ratton's gallery. This text by Breton constitutes the preface, completed by the commentary for the general public that appeared in La Semaine de Paris at the same time. Primitive objects, fetishes, ready-mades, and recent productions by Picasso give substance to this reflection upon the object, which is at the centre of Breton's aesthetic writings in the 1930s. “The white disc is replaced by the red disc and people are beginning to crowd onto the platform for the arrival of the train that does not stop, which is neither a passenger train nor a freight train. In its windows, being-objects (or object-beings?) characterised by the fact that they are in the grip of a continuous transformation and express the perpetuity of the struggle between the aggregating and disaggregating powers that compete for true reality and life.”
