On the back of an invitation card from the galerie Fürstenberg, a few notes for ‘The Language of Stones’ which would be published in Le Surréalisme, même, autumn 1957.

On the back of an invitation card from the galerie Fürstenberg, Breton wrote out these few notes for his text ‘Langue des pierres’ (‘The Language of Stones’) which would be published in issue 3 of Surréalisme, même, autumn 1957. An amateur mineralogist ever since his stay at the Gaspé Peninsula at the end of the war, André Breton always loved stones; he saw the search for agates and gemstones as a quest for origins, a search for signs. On the back of an invitation card from the galerie Fürstenberg, a handwritten text by Breton:
‘The rounded gemstone (the one that is no longer threatened at / by its corners) (it) responds by a kind of very distant smile stamped with condescension that couldn’t reasonably hurt us/you … The portrait of Laut[réamont] that Dali had claimed to catch using the paranoia-critical method would be better sought through the agates of Uruguay.’ [Auction catalogue, 2003]
