Description

Autograph manuscript by André Breton, of which only one text is dated 25 December 1958.

Elisa as a clairvoyant. In this game based on intuitive graphology, invented by André Breton and his wife, Elisa is tasked with guessing the character and marital status of André Breton's correspondents, based on their handwriting on envelopes. Marcel Duchamp, Pieyre de Mandiargues, Julien Gracq, Joan Miró and Maurice Fourré (the author of La Nuit du Rose-Hôtel) were all given an intuitive portrait that can strike a chord - like that of Gracq, for example.

Impressed by the results, which he edited himself, André Breton published the game in the magazine Le Surréalisme, même. A handwritten text by André Breton, who copied Elisa's graphological interpretations from five envelope addresses: Marcel Duchamp, André Pieyre de Mandiargues, Julien Gracq, Maurice Fourré, Joan Miró. Enclosed are three envelope photographs, two of which are titled on the back by Breton. [Auction Catalogue, 2003]
