Description
‘Lumière noire’ [Black Light], a text written in New York and published in December 1943 in a Canadian magazine, Le Monde libre, reprinted in Arcane 17.
Opposing a certain aesthetics of war such as can be found in Ernst Jünger, for example, Breton's text dreams of "repassioning life", analysing the pre-war period as a situation of boredom, of stagnation of thought. Surrealism, then, appears as a real alternative to the war’s shameful diversion, the "definitive suppression" of which Breton is imagining here. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]
