Description

Manuscript signed by André Breton and dated 9 September 1959.

In Breton's hand, this two-part manuscript, both dated September 1959, gives an idea of Duchamp's contribution to the International Exhibition of Surrealism in December. It shows the New Yorker continuing to explore the practical avenues that would enable him to develop his idea of the ‘living ceiling’, as well as suggesting the term ‘lascivious missives’ - not to mention a ‘lascivious machine’ even more fascinating than the ‘copulation machine’, which he had postulated. Lebel, José Pierre and Bellmer were also among the exhibition's principal inspirers. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]

Autograph manuscript signed by André Breton and dated 9 September 1959.- 1 page in-12, handwritten in black ink in two columns, ‘Catalogue’ and ‘Exhibition’, and titled ‘Suggestions from Marcel, 9 September 1959’ by André Breton, on the verso of a sheet of EROS letterheaded paper.
