Description

To defend Artaud is not to clear him of any “aberration of the mind,” but rather to acknowledge the range of his madness and the creative power which lies in it, and the fact that the cry of Artaud arises from the “caves of being.”

Responding to a question of Jean Laurent for La Tour de feu in December 1959, Breton presents Artaud not just as a leading authority, as he suggested since the beginning of the 1950’s, but as a leader brandishing a symbolic banner, to which young minds subscribe "forever."

“Since I didn’t want to contradict him, I quickly moved on. But one morning – we were sitting alone at the terrace of the Café Deux-Magots – he summoned me, in the name of all that binds us, to confound those who contest the authenticity of this fact. I was then compelled to explain this point in specific terms (in order to offend him in least possible way), saying that, on that matter, my memories didn’t corroborate his. He looked at me with despair and with tears in his eyes, during a few endless seconds…

His deduction was that the occult forces from which a sense of acrimony had been unleashed, had succeeded in misleading my memory. When we happened to meet again, we never talked about it, but no doubt that I was greatly lowered in his estimation...”

“Artaud, shortly before he died, has been able to realize his extremely lucid work on Van Gogh, indisputably a work of art. The cry of Artaud – as the cry of Edouard Munch – arises from the “caves of being.” Forevermore young minds will identify with this scorched banner”. Description

Major vehicle of Surrealist thought, the review Littérature would publish some of the most important surrealist texts such as The Magnetic Fields. The title of Littérature was originally proposed by Paul Valéry, who was inspired by the last line of one of Verlaine's art poétique (1874) which reads: "And all the rest is literature". André Breton, director and co-editor of the review would say that the adoption of this title was done ironically in the spirit of derision.

The first 20 issues extend from March 1919 to August 1921. The "new series," (la nouvelle série), presented here, was issued after a break with the Dada movement and would count 13 issues from March 1922 to June 1924, including one double issue (11/12).

Archives manuscrites de la séance du bureau de recherches surréalistes du 4 décembre 1926.

Décembre 1926, le 4. Près d'un an après les démarches entreprises pour la fusion de Clarté et de La Révolution surréaliste, une réunion d'importance repose la question de l'action politique, et notamment de l'adhésion au parti communiste. Marcel Fourrier, de Clarté, sert ici d'intermédiaire, donnant le conseil d'attendre un peu - on sait que Breton adhérera en janvier 1927. Camille Goesmans, de la revue belge Correspondance, est là lui aussi. Artaud, quant à lui, a fait l'objet d'une exclusion dont tous ne respectent pas la lettre, ce qui suscite une discussion. « Pour en revenir à Artaud, j'étais assis avec J. Baron aux Deux Magots lorsqu'il passa devant nous. Nous lui serrâmes la main et je lui dis que je n'avais pas cessé, jusqu'à nouvel ordre, de le tenir pour un révolutionnaire, mais que je lui demandais de m'éclairer au sujet de son exclusion.
