Description

Undated handwritten notes written in ink by André Breton.

A jumbled set of texts, some of which (such as this footnote added to a book and reference to the discovery of one of the Douanier Rousseau’s unknown sources) must have been published; the mention of Père Enfantin, Fourier’s main disciple, and a quotation from Michel Butor about Magritte may suggest that as a whole it dates from the 1960s, or even 1965, the year of the exhibition L’Écart absolu which was organised under the sign of Fourier, and also the year of the definitive re-edition of Surrealism and Painting. In any event, judging from the archives these are some of the last texts Breton wrote or copied. Included are also observations about Sade, a bibliographic note on the publisher Pierre-Albert Benoît (Breton’s library contained several of his works), games, bibliographic notes that could be destined for a sale, and notes from his reading about painting that could be connected to the work on Surrealism and Painting.
