Author

By (artist) Aloys Zötl

Description

"The 1843 l'Écureuil volant was distinguished by its capacities as an aviator, and Zötl's attention must have been drawn by the extreme singularity of gait or bearing of the beasts in Pipa in 1844, l'Amphisbène noire in 1848, le Dronte in 1859, la Rana varia in 1863, le Luth in 1867 and l'Éléphant de mer which we have already seen. And if today we are still filled with wonder at the descriptions that the artist left, we can be sure that he was the first to have been filled with wonder by them." José Pierre (Julio Cortazar (texte de), Giovanni Mariotti (introduction de), José Pierre (postface de), Aloys Zötl (1803-1887), Milan, Franco Maria Ricci, 1976, p. 138)
