Manuscript of a tract signed by André Breton and dated 23 November 1938.
Faced with the resurgence of nationalism, Breton’s bête noire since the First World War, this text, which appeared in Clé, the bulletin of the Fédération Internationale pour un Art Révolutionnaire Indépendant (FIARI), vigorously asserts the principles of a well-understood internationalism, the only way to avoid the worst. Written in November 1938 and published at the beginning of 1939, at a time when the less clear-sighted could believe in the Munich Agreement, this text attempts to define an intellectual space that distances itself both from official internationalism, that of the patently Stalinist Third International, and from the nationalisms that were in full revival. Breton's text appeared in the first issue of Clé, the FIARI bulletin edited by Maurice Nadeau, on 1 January 1939. The federation's national committee included Yves Allégret, André Breton, Michel Collinet, Jean Giono, Maurice Heine, Pierre Mabille, Marcel Martinet, André Masson, Henry Poulaille, Gérard Rosenthal, Victor Serge and Maurice Wullens, with André Breton as secretary general.
