Description

Undated handwritten list by André Breton, part of the dossier for the Surrealism in 1947 exhibition.

A whole series of painters and writers illustrate the idea of Liberty, forming an extended list that is given here in two forms, one handwritten and the second typewritten, which attest to the existence of a precise project. The reference to Picasso and the affair of Stalin’s portrait makes it possible to date the whole thing to the 1950s, although no further details are known at present. We can nevertheless assume that it is a personal memorandum, one of those lists Breton likes to draw up; perhaps for a draft article or an issue of a review. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]

Manuscript, undated [1947].

Three in-12 pages of texts by André Breton handwritten in pencil, entitled ‘Liberty’. A list of names of philosophers, poets, painters and alchemists from the Renaissance to the present day: "Lautrec, Seurat, Gauguin, Picasso (The Death of Marat) Cravan, Apollinaire, Roussel, Jarry, Vaché, Rimbaud, Lautréamont, Duchamp".

A typed list of the same names is attached. [Auction Catalogue, 2003]
