Notes by André Breton

Description

Manuscript by André Breton filed as ‘unclassifiable’, among drawings by Robert Desnos and texts from the early 1920s. This text in André Breton’s handwriting is filed as… ‘unclassifiable’, a brown folder in which he has placed together, mostly, drawings by Desnos and texts that appear to date from the very early 1920s. One could, if one were to cross-reference it with the few indications in Breton’s Entrée des mediums [The Mediums Enter], assume that these are notes dictated by a sleeping René Crevel - Crevel who, according to Breton, made a specialty of "criminal stories" during these sessions. The minor 'stage directions', such as bis [again], would be consistent with dictation, in any case. A recurring motif in this text, which contributes greatly to its strangeness, is the question of dreams: am I dreaming? There remains the relative coherence, the novelistic quality of certain aspects, which makes the reader float between the hypothesis of a particularly elaborate ‘sleeping fit’ and a dream narrative reconstructed afterwards. 2 large in-4° pages (with frayed margins) in black pencil inserted inside a sheet of paper dated Thursday. "The six bullets from my Browning will find six brains. "Do you think this is the first time I have responded to invisible voices that are not the voices of Providence?”
