Description

Speech by André Breton, given in Paris on 11 November 1938

'What to say about what we love and how to make it love?' Returned from Mexico in summer 1938, Breton worked tirelessly to share his dazzling discovery. The Mexico exhibition organised at Renou and Colle in 1939 speaks to this ambition, presenting objects and paintings, notably those by Frida Kahlo, in a long preface. The whole is not considered as participating in any sort of exoticism, but rather of an 'unknown interior'. The catalogue is accompanied by the article 'Visit with Leon Trotsky' and by the Manifesto for an Independent Revolutionary Art, written with the revolutionnary but for strategic reasons co-signed by Diego Rivera.
