    Description

"For André Masson the Palais de la Découverte and the Musée de l'Homme were not, as they were for most mortals, more or less familiar spots in the external world. It is clear that in his head-open day and night to a wholly different register of seductive visions they pre-existed the construction of the actual buildings. Knowing what we now do about gaps in time and space, Masson's visions seem premonitory, those of a Primitive Man who nevertheless is our most reliable and most lucid guide toward the raising dawn and the fabled countries beyond. With him, well beyond any sort of acrobatics or exploits, we touch on a myth which was truly being constructed during this period. In him as an individual, we can fully reconcile the authentic artist and authentic revolutionary; in his honour we have the pleasure of rendering all its youthfulness and ardour to the word fraternité." André Breton (Le surréalisme et la peinture, Nouvelle édition revue et corrigée, 1928-1965, Paris, Gallimard, 1965, p. 154).
