Photographie de la même série que celle utilisée par André Breton pour illustrer Nadja. C'est à l'hôtel des Grands Hommes que fut inventée l'écriture automatique.
Au printemps 1919 Philippe Soupault a 23 ans et André Breton, 22. C'est dans l'hôtel des Grand Hommes qu'ils inventent l'écriture automatique.
En huit jours, dans la fièvre, aux prix d'une activité insensée, en s'y livrant parfois huit à dix heures consécutives, ils écrivent Les Champs magnétiques.
Le mouvement du surréalisme est lancé.
