Handwritten letter signed and dated Paris, 16 September 1957.
Handwritten letter dated Paris, 16 September 1957, signed by André Breton to René Alleau, concerning the reservations expressed by the surrealists regarding René Alleau's text ‘La Nef et la ville’..
The text of first draft of this letter by André Breton as well as René Alleau’s response is attached.
‘However beautiful it may be, the sentence in your text concerning the ‘nothings’ likely to set Paris ablaze invokes ‘freedom’ very summarily, something which, to say the least, appears until then to have been absent from the feast. Dear René, I’d be grateful if you could take into account how much I, and you may be sure all of our surrealist friends, have always placed on your thought and it is in this light that I ask you to consider what I am compelled to say to you with the greatest possible understanding and friendship.’ [André Breton website, 2003]
This draft is accompanied by a second version of the letter and René Alleau's reply. [André Breton website, 2020]
