    Letter to Aube Breton-Elléouët

    Description

A poem by André Breton dedicated to his daughter Aube, written on 17 March, 1946, on the way from Havana to New Orleans.

    LISTENING TO THE SHELL

I hadn’t started to see you you were DAWN

    Nothing was revealed

The boats were all rocking on the shore

Untying the ribbons (you know this) of those boxes of sugared almonds

Pink and white between which a silver shuttle ambules

And trembling I named you Dawn

I’d have liked to bring you the tropical flower

    That opens at midnight

A single snow crystal that would overflow the cup of your two hands

In Martinique it is called the flower of the ball

With it you share the mystery of existence

The first speck of dew outstripping all others crazily iridescent containing everything

I see what is forever hidden from me

When you sleep in the clearing of your arm under the butterflies of your hair

And when you are reborn from the phoenix of your spring

    In the mint of memory

Of the enigmatic moiré of likeness in an immeasurable mirror

Eluding what will be seen only once

All the milkweed wings in my heart

    Adorn what you tell me

You wear a summer dress that you don't yourself know

Almost immaterial it is studded in all directions with beautiful red lead horseshoe magnets with blue bases
