Description

Proofs of promotional extracts from Nadja, dating from 1927, and corrected in André Breton's hand.

Most likely intended for the journal Commerce, this version of the prologue to Nadja, of which we here have the proofs (with only minor alteration), is identical to the one that will appear in the book. Published in the autumn of 1927 in a journal known for its quality, it attests to Breton's desire to prepare his book for a reception commensurate with what he had put into it. La Révolution surréaliste and the American journal Transition published other fragments in early 1928. The definitive volume, scheduled for April 1928, did not go to press until 25 May. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]
