Autograph (and typographical) manuscript signed by André Breton, undated, on the back of a letterhead of La Révolution surréaliste.
It begins like Valéry - also the author of a poem entitled 'Rameur' - but very quickly the alexandrine breaks down (7/5) before giving way under the pressure of the heptasyllable in a final, irregular verse (7/7). As for the interplay of letters extracted from the poem, how could these be understood other than by invoking chance? The allusion to Walt Whitman is surprising, given Breton hardly ever referred to the work of the American poet, though perhaps this was due to Apollinaire’s influence? Finally, one might note that Breton's signature on this manuscript shows his favoured numbers, 17 and 13. [Atelier André Breton website]
