Description

Text of André Breton’s lecture given during a meeting of the AEAR at the Salle du Grand-Orient on 23 February 1933.

This is a very important document, containing the entirety of a lecture published in Point du jour, and subsequently in the Oeuvres completes, with just a few cuts. 'Regarding the contribution of proletarian literature organised by L’Humanité’ came at a critical moment in Breton's intellectual life (February 1933) when he was still trying to assure the PCF and its offshoots, in this case the AEAR, of his good will. But a common thread lies behind the quotations from Lenin that already represents a clear inclination to save part of bourgeois literature. It is a tightrope walker’s exercise and presages the great liberation of the manifesto written with Trotsky in 1938, in which Breton frees art of any subordination to politics.
