Description

File on the exclusion of Salvador Dalí for “Hitlerism” dated from January to March 1934.

The Dalí affair, a decisive step in the gradual separation from the group and from which he will soon be named Avida Dollars by his disappointed friends. But the break does not occur simply for reasons of economic morality. Its origins were the concerns of the surrealists in the face of what appeared to them as a conversion of Dalí to fascism, in this month of February 1934 when politics returned to the foreground, between the successes of Hitler and the fascist leagues which were agitating in France. The painter speaks of a ‘misunderstanding’ in a letter from March 1934, and the crisis seems to have been averted. For more details on this ‘Dalí affair’, refer to the Pléiade chronology, volume II, p. XL.
