    Manuscript of André Breton’s family tree, drawn and set out by him, before 1935.

    Genealogies... If here we have a family tree of the most classic kind, how can one not see that the idea of genealogy runs through Breton’s works like an obsession? That said, he never stops rebuilding his origins, leaving behind simple filial relationships so as to reinvent himself a set of literary ancestors, who following the example of his friends make up his new family. In the ‘true’ family tree we note the attention paid by the poet to cases of deviations — from imbalance and escape all the way to sisters who throw away their habit (shouldn’t this be their ‘veil’?)...
