One of the first editions of Maturin’s novel, which Breton republished in 1954; 1st to 6th volume.
Original French edition of this masterpiece of the gothic novel which had a considerable influence on French fantastic literature, the romantic generation, as well as on Balzac and Baudelaire.
In his remarkable catalogue on Gothic Novels and Fairy Tales, Marc Loliée noted in 1952 that this French original edition was “almost untraceable”.
Handwritten pencil notes by André Breton on the first volume, referring to pages on which he highlighted certain passages in the margins.
