Description
Handwritten manuscript by André Breton responding to Pierre Mabille’s enquiry dated 16 June 1941.
A ‘tidied up’ version of this text was published in the Inédits I of volume III of the Oeuvres complètes, under the title ‘Réponse à une enquête de Pierre Mabille’, in which the editors say they aren’t sure if Mabille's name is correct since the manuscript is simply marked ‘P.M.’. Breton gives a summary, specifically cross-referencing the text of another enquiry (for La Nacion in Ciudad de Trujillo) about his experiences since the phony war. - 2 pages in-12, manuscript in green ink by Breton, dated and signed, of this response to an inquiry by Pierre Mabille:
‘I particularly remember the passionate interest my friends and I took at the end of the other war in full contrast to the darkness we knew in Europe, in those even ephemeral publications where the freedom of the spirit culminated that were called ‘291,’ ‘The Blind Man,’ ‘Wrong Wrong,’ and which brought us the message of Duchamp, Picabia, Cravan...’
