Description

Folder of the preparation for one of the twelve altars planned for the Surrealist Exhibition of 1947.

‘La chevelure de Falmer’ (‘Falmer’s hair’) was dedicated as the second altar of the International Surrealist Exhibition of 1947. While the altar for the Tigre mondain was placed under the sign of Aries, the one for La Chevelure was linked to Taurus, to topaz and to the ‘abysses of fire’… something that was no doubt not straightforward to put in practice. In organising this rite of worship Péret was placed in charge of the food for the imaginary beings: here he proposed ‘a pile of feathers from which emerge large screws’. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]
