Description

Proof copies of the four tarot cards by Matta used in the original edition of Arcane 17.

Stylised, as sharply defined as genuine traditional tarot cards, but heading completely for the imaginary, and raw in an entirely modern way: that’s the tarot de Marseille revisited by the surrealists, in this instance Matta who follows on from the group of December 1940 – Breton, Jacqueline, Masson, Dominguez, Lam, Hérold and Brauner drawing cards so as to stave off boredom while waiting to depart for the New World. This new series, made for the original edition of Arcane 17 (at the end of 1944 or early 1945), confirms the prominent place assumed during the war by the young Chilian painter, who here was inspired by the 6th, 7th, 17th and 18th Arcana.
