Description
Manuscript page by André Breton of this game of scholarly notation, undated.
One day or one evening around 1926 or 1927, Simone and André played a two-person game awarding marks to the works of Baron, Aragon, Desnos, Vitrac, Éluard, Tzara, Soupault, Saint-John Perse (whose initials are those of his real name, Saint-Léger Léger), Valéry, Apollinaire, and Breton himself. He, in all modesty, gives the best marks of his roll of honour to his Les Champs magnétiques (with Soupault only meriting 18), equal top with Apollinaire’s Les Onze mille verges and La Soirée avec Monsieur Teste by Valéry. This is very revealing when it comes to the contrast between his public declarations, that were quite aggressive regarding Valéry and somewhat mixed regarding Apollinaire in this period, and the secret love of a writer who stayed true to his first enthusiasms as a reader.
