    Description

A dossier in preparation for the altar conceived by Benjamin Péret for the International Surrealist Exhibition of 1947: The Invisible Object.

Sign: Pisces; associated stone: jacinth; name: ‘The Invisible Object’. On its altar, devised by the surrealists for the International Surrealist Exhibition of 1947, are written the words ‘The cohorts of fire take their rest’. Not much more will be learned in consulting his dossier, other than that the altar is festooned with spider webs, and that the victuals offered to this strange divinity are – in another of Benjamin Péret’s inventions – ‘musical instruments broken into pieces but still recognisable’. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]

Folder labelled by André Breton of one of the 12 altars in the surrealist exhibition at the Galerie Maeght in 1947 (the whole set in a folder with a ribbon also labelled by André Breton).
