    Description

Manuscript of a text that was published in Le Figaro littéraire on 13 September 1947 before being reprinted in Free Rein (La Clé des Champs).
Magloire-Saint-Aude, a rare and disdainful poet - like a certain past confession signed by Breton. Such is the beneficiary, still too little known despite the efforts of the preface writer, of this little text which will be included in Free Rein (La Clé des champs), accompanied by some fifteen verses announced in the introductory sentence. Breton salutes in the Haitian poet for his exceptional restraint, clearly distinguishing itself from all contemporary French - that is to say Francophone - poetry. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]

    Signed manuscript (1947).
1/2 page in-4° handwritten and titled by Breton, of a text published in Le Figaro littéraire on 13 September 1947 in which Breton pays hommage to Magloire-Saint-Aude, the Haitian poet he met in December 1945, at the beginning of his stay in Haiti.
    Cross-outs and corrections.

‘We are looking for who, since the Sphinx, would have succeeded in stopping the passer-by within such limits. In French poetry, sometimes Scève, Nerval, Mallarmé, Apollinaire... But you know very well that everything is much too relaxed today. There is only one exception: Magloire-Saint-Aude.’ [auction catalogue, 2003, translation by Christina Heflin, 2023]
