Description

A prose poem by André Breton dated the morning of 8 May, 1946.

Published for the first time in Section One of previously unpublished writings in the Œuvres complètes, Volume III, this prose poem is dated the morning of 8 May 1946. Written on the anniversary of the armistice, which André Breton celebrated in his own way by exalting liberation in poetry, as opposed to the regressive texts – poetically speaking – of certain former comrades promoted as Resistance poets. This prose poem takes up the thread of automatism and gives us one of his most fluid poems.

Autograph manuscript signed 8 May 1946. - Signed autograph manuscript of a prose poem, 8 May 1946.

Text handwritten by Breton in blue ink on an envelope.

“The evening is a spade in the hands of a god. What he throws behind him onto the land falls upon little glass castles where star-coloured chambermaids perform...”
