Description

Manuscript written at the request of the CNT on 22 February 1952 in support of eleven Spanish anarchists.

This text, known and published as the Wagram Speech, is a declaration of support for eleven Spanish anarchists sentenced to death by the Franco dictatorship in 1952. Breton was responding to an appeal from the CNT, the major Spanish trade union confederation. The intervention of Camus, Sartre, Char, and a few others who spoke at the meeting did not, however, prevent five of the condemned from being executed. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]

Signed autograph manuscript, Paris, 22 February 1952.

- 3 pages in 4° handwritten, dated and signed in black ink by Breton, of a speech delivered on 22 February 1952 at the Salle Wagram in Paris, where, after giving a long history of the Barcelona strikes of March 1951, Breton made a stirring appeal:

“Given the latest news that the deceitful lawyers acting for our comrades have notified them they are going to be shot, let us all speak with one voice in demanding that the Seville and Barcelona trials are openly reviewed, with real lawyers, who have had time to study the case, and under the guarantee of foreign observers… Life and glory to the heroic Spanish C.N.T. [Confederacion Nacional del Trabajo]."

Erasures and corrections. [Auction Catalogue, 2003]
