Churinga aborigène
Australie

Aboriginal Churinga
Australia

Oblong wooden Churinga. Sligtly convex on one of its sides, it is engraved on both sides with traditional motifs. The concentric circles symbolize a water source or a meeting point; the semi-circles, the members of a clan; the lines, footpaths or lances. It is also marked with animal tracks.

This object is at the same time an aid to remember events important to individuals or the clan, a depiction of the symbolic route to Dreamtime, which is the provenance of Aboriginal cosmonogy, and a map of an actual topography.
